Frequently asked

Sober living, answered plainly.

The questions people actually ask before reaching out.

What is sober living, and how is it different from treatment?

Sober living is structured, substance-free housing for people in recovery. It is not clinical treatment. Renovia Sober Living offers apartment-style homes in Wilmington, NC where residents live while they build a stable, independent life, supported by a free shuttle to the Renovia Behavioral Health outpatient facility about three miles away.

What are the rules and expectations?

The core rule is full sobriety, including marijuana. Residents commit to being actively engaged in a legitimate recovery program, verified through a signed release of information. Accountability is handled through clear, signed agreements and a tiered system of warnings, though major violations, like using in the home, lead to an immediate exit.

Is there transportation to and from treatment?

Yes. A free shuttle runs between the homes and the Renovia Behavioral Health outpatient facility, about three miles away, every day of programming. Breakfast and lunch are covered while you’re at the outpatient facility.

How much does sober living cost?

Renovia Sober Living is $800 a month for a standard room with a shared hallway bathroom and $825 a month for a room with an en suite bathroom. That includes a fully furnished apartment, all utilities, high-speed Wi-Fi, and an in-unit washer and dryer. There is also a one-time $250 application fee and a $400 security deposit due at move-in. Sober living is billed separately from clinical treatment.

How does sober living connect to the outpatient program?

Renovia Behavioral Health is where the clinical work happens. Renovia Sober Living is where you live while doing that work and after it ends. A free shuttle links the two, but you’re welcome at either one without using both.

How long can I stay in sober living?

There is no fixed time limit. Your stay lasts long enough to get steady, stable in recovery, settled in work or school, and ready to carry the structure on your own. A house manager path, offered at reduced rent, exists for residents who want to grow further into the community.

What is provided in the homes?

Three buildings on a quiet, fenced cul-de-sac, four apartments per building, each fully furnished with utilities, high-speed Wi-Fi, and an in-unit washer and dryer. Outside, there’s a yard, a gazebo, and a grill area. Parking passes are available for $50 a month, since spaces are limited. What to bring is kept simple, generally one to two weeks of clothing, with a full list provided at application.

Do I have to be in treatment to live there?

You have to be engaged in a recovery program, but it does not have to be Renovia Behavioral Health’s program. Any legitimate program counts, confirmed through a signed release of information. Many residents do attend outpatient treatment here, and the shuttle makes that an easy fit, but it isn’t required.

Is marijuana allowed if it is legal where I am?

No. Renovia Sober Living holds to full sobriety, including marijuana, regardless of whether it’s legal where you’re from. The same goes for alcohol. Even where it’s legal, it isn’t allowed in a sober living environment, for the benefit of everyone’s recovery. The standard is sobriety, full stop, and it protects every resident’s recovery equally.
